Residents of Shyamnagar Municipality in Satkhira have been facing severe challenges due to the suspension of birth registration certificate services for the past two years. Parents are particularly worried about the admission of their young children to schools. With the new academic year of 2025 approaching, guardians plan to enroll over 100 children in schools, but the lack of birth certificates has become a significant obstacle.

Former Shyamnagar municipal councilor Delowar Azizur Rahman Azibor stated, “Since the declaration of the new municipality, the birth registration service has been suspended for more than two years, causing immense suffering to the public. Parents are struggling with school admissions, vaccinations, and other essential services for their children.

Former female councilor Delowara Begum also expressed concern, mentioning that hundreds of children might not be able to enroll in schools in the new year due to the ongoing issues. She noted, “Without birth certificates, schools, madrasas, or other educational institutions are refusing to admit children, leaving parents deeply anxious.

Alam Sheikh, a resident of Ward 6, said, I could not enroll my child in a good school for two years due to the absence of a birth certificate. If this situation continues, our children’s future will be in jeopardy.Similarly, former Ward 6 councilor and journalist SK Siraj shared, “Although my child is seven years old, I still haven’t been able to register their birth. If this issue persists, the future of hundreds of children in Shyamnagar Municipality will remain uncertain.

Shyamnagar Municipality’s Executive Officer, Tushar Kanti Das, commented on the matter, saying, “The birth registration system has been inactive since the municipality’s gazette notification. We have already sent a letter to the concerned department through the administrator and are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Shyamnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mosammat Roni Khatun, currently serving as the municipality’s administrator, stated, “Upon learning about the issue, I immediately sent a letter to the concerned department and discussed the matter with the Deputy Commissioner. Ensuring that Shyamnagar’s residents do not face any difficulties is my priority. I seek everyone’s cooperation in transforming Shyamnagar into a digital upazila.
